Document attestation is the authentication of documents that are mandatory for various purposes like getting an Employment visa/Student visa/Permanent Residence visa/Long Term Residential Visa or any other purposes. Document attestation is categorized into three different types of documents, including, personal, educational, and commercial. All these documents are required to be attested from multiple authorities; however, the attestation process is slightly different for each type of document.

To get this service initiated, all original documents and copies are to be first validated by the respective authorities of the State/Union Territory from where the same was issued. If you are looking for getting your personal documents such as; Birth Certificate/Marriage Certificate attested, the same has to get validated by the Home/General Administration Department of the concerned State Government/Union Territory. On the other hand, for educational documents, the same has to be authenticated by the Education Department of the concerned State Government/Union Territory. This comes under the State HRD Authentication. Likewise, for Commercial Documents, respective Chambers of Commerce would be the designated authority. However, this is to be noted that if you have not got them verified, worry not! Different states authentication has different requirements, and different government bodies can validate your certificates/documents.
Once done with the State authentication, there are two types of MEA Attestation:

To be precise, apostille is a type of attestation wherein, documents such as; birth/death/marriage certificates, Affidavits and Power of Attorney are legalized and accepted in 105 countries that are the member of the Hague Convention. Under normal circumstances, once the document is apostilled, it does not require to be attested further from the concerned embassy.

To get your documents attested, it should be done from the Ministry of External Affairs, then it should first get authenticated by the respective home department/GAD (General Administration Department), where these documents have originated.
